India’s UPI has gone live in Greece, allowing eligible customers to send money to India instantly, securely and at lower costs than conventional transfer channels.

The service is being offered through a partnership between Eurobank and NPCI International Payments Ltd, the overseas arm of the National Payments Corporation of India.

Eurobank said the service enables cross-border remittances from Greece to India using UPI. It described the launch as the first such UPI-based remittance service by a Greek and Cypriot bank, as well as the first by a bank in south-eastern Europe.

The demonstration in Athens was attended by Eurobank CEO Fokion Karavias and Fairfax Digital Services CEO Sanjay Tugnait.

India’s Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said he witnessed a live demonstration of the service at Eurobank’s headquarters in Athens.

“Delighted to witness the live demonstration of the Eurobank-NIPL partnership enabling UPI services at Eurobank headquarters in Athens,” Goyal said in a post on X, calling it “another important milestone” in the global expansion of India’s digital payments ecosystem.

He said eligible customers would be able to transfer money “instantly, securely, and seamlessly”, with transaction costs reduced “to a fraction of conventional transfer costs”.

Eurobank said the service is already available in Greece and is expected to be launched in Cyprus at a later stage. It said the system covers the full transaction process, including initiation, clearing, reconciliation and dispute management.

The launch adds to India’s efforts to expand UPI and other digital public infrastructure beyond its domestic market. The Indian government has signed agreements with a number of countries for cooperation on India Stack and Digital Public Infrastructure, covering areas including digital identity, payments, data exchange and service delivery.

UPI is already live in several overseas markets in different forms, including merchant payments and cross-border payment services. These include the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, France, Mauritius, Qatar and Cambodia.

UPI, launched in India in 2016, is a real-time payment system that enables instant transfers between bank accounts and is widely used for person-to-person and merchant payments.
