Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) will establish its first-ever international campus in Indonesia.
The proposed campus will be located at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone in Malang and is intended to serve learners from Indonesia and neighbouring Southeast Asian countries.
“We are going to establish a campus of India's prestigious management institute, IIM Bangalore, in Indonesia, which will greatly benefit the youth across the entire ASEAN region,” PM Modi said during a joint press statement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta on 7 July 2026.

The announcement came after bilateral talks between the two leaders, during which India and Indonesia also discussed cooperation in areas including AI, telecommunications, Digital Public Infrastructure and start-ups.
The programme will be implemented through a memorandum of understanding between IIM Bangalore and PT Intelegensia Grahatama, the managing and development entity of the Singhasari SEZ.
IIM Bangalore has said its programmes in Indonesia will be introduced in two phases. The first phase will focus on executive education programmes for senior executives, business leaders and public sector professionals.
A second phase is expected to introduce degree-granting management programmes, subject to the successful implementation of the first phase over the initial two years.

The planned curriculum will include global supply chains, digital transformation, AI, climate and sustainability, and healthcare management.
Participants in Indonesia are also expected to have opportunities for short academic immersion visits to IIM Bangalore’s Bengaluru campus, offering exposure to India’s innovation, industry and business environment.
IIM Bangalore director-in-charge U Dinesh Kumar said the partnership would help develop a leadership pool for companies in Indonesia as well as global corporations.
Jitamitra Desai, Professor and Member of IIM Bangalore’s Board of Governors, said “With our significant strength in management education and research, IIMB is well positioned to deliver high-quality, high-reputation management programs and make Indonesia a global hub in business education.”
“We believe that this program will lead to significantly improved employment opportunities for Indonesian citizens and expatriates alike and push the envelope in making the Global South region the preferred destination for both quality education and business leadership,” he added.
The announcement follows overseas initiatives by other Indian institutions, including IIM Ahmedabad in Dubai, IIT Delhi in Abu Dhabi and IIT Madras in Zanzibar.
The Indonesia project is part of India’s broader effort to expand the international presence of its higher education institutions under the National Education Policy 2020.
